Fall In Arkansas added: OCT08
Fall In Arkansas
Fall, this is my favorite time of year in Arkansas. The different colors in the trees and
the leaves falling from the sky. The cooler nights and the smell of wild onions in the air.
Most of all though is the wildlife that are out roaming around. I have lived in many
places in the U.S. and have been to many different countries but where I live right now
is one of the closest to amazing in my eyes.
I feel like I'm surrounded by life when I'm outside at home even though I drive about four
miles off the main stretch of road on top of a mountain in the foothills of the Ozarks.
And that's where I live now; where the house is surrounded by tall hickory trees and
rows of pine trees. Through the pines I can see the sparkling water of the pond and
just a short walk through the pines and I'm on the banks of it. If I catch it just right I can
watch a group of geese fly onto the pond. There's nothing like the sound of their wings
splashing the top of the water as they land. I can sat and listen to the music that the
jumping fish, frogs, and the birds make. The darker it gets it seems the louder the
frogs get as the sounds of them rotate around the pond from the other side back to me.
As the sun goes down in the afternoon over the hills it's almost everyday during the fall
that as I walk back through the pines I can find a few deer eating the acorns out of the
yard.
Fall in Arkansas.

Hurricane Season added: SEP08
What a start of the hurricane season this year.
Before Hurricane Gustav came we had already seen a tropical storm weave through
the Southeast out of control. And now after the first actual hurricane of the season
slams straight into the most vulnerable part of the U.S. Where just 3 years ago went
through much damage to the levees and the city of New Orleans. I am glad to see that
we are more prepared and organized this time around. The force of a storm cell of this
nature is nothing to be careless about when it hits land. Taking shelter is not always
the best option. Gustav shows us that an organized evacuation is the key to saving
lives, especially in this part of the Gulf of Mexico. While traveling across the Pacific
Ocean on the aircraft carrier, I remember us having to take a longer route around a
tsunami near Indonesia. Even the distance that we were from this tsunami, I could still
feel the waves crashing up against the side of the ship. The power of these waves as
they slammed up against the ship was amazingly fierce. I think about the small
islands in these areas where typhoons just sweep right over them. History has shown
that nothing can protect these islands where the winds and high seas of typhoons have
caused major damage and fatalities. At that point it would be either evacuating from
the path of the storm or finding a secure underground shelter; water resistant might
help.
As I write this, I can hear and see the high winds and heavy rainfall of Hurricane Gustav
even in northern Arkansas. The storm cell still circles around over land like a far
spread tornado. This shows the power of hurricanes even so far inland through so
much friction of land and lesser water vapor from the sea. I can see the meaning
behind the statement.....
The Hurricane is truly a daughter of the Sun and the Sea.
